Western Sydney Airport to consider IPO when sold off by Commonwealth

Different companies have been appointed to oversee various parts of the project, with design firm Architectus named in November to develop a 191-hectare business park, which will sit inside the airport’s gates with the aim of attracting defence and aerospace companies, as well as medical technology, educational and tourism companies.

Another design group, Arup, has been appointed to plan the airport, and WSA is looking for baggage handling specialists. “The baggage handling system is the heart of the terminal and a number of airports have made the mistake of not getting it quite right,” Mr Millett said.

An architectural group is expected to be chosen to design the airport terminal in 2019, with construction on the terminal scheduled to start in 2022.

Mr Millett said he was worried about the rising costs of labour and materials due to the boom in large infrastructure projects.

“Demand has run well ahead of capacity, and it’s happened fairly quickly, we’re playing a lot of catch up,” he said. “The economic cycle is sweet for governments and they can afford to spend on infrastructure and they have, but that’s put enormous strains on the industry which hasn’t been geared up to this level of activity before.

“There is pressure on pricing but there is also pressure on basic resources. There is pressure on labour and also pressure on materials – some of the quarries I’ve heard are starting to feel the strain in their ability to provide quantities to all of these projects.”
