Alipay gains entry to Sydney Airport through Tyro, Heinemann

Tyro chief product officer Bronwyn Yam said the decision to partner with Alipay was “definitely driven” by a desire from their customers to capture the revenue possibilities enabled by the nearly 1.4 million Chinese visitors to Australia in 2018 and said all businesses who bank with Tyro would have Alipay rolled out to them by June after the small initial Heinemann rollout.

“Tyro is further diversifying its offering and responding to merchant needs by introducing initiatives that will attract more revenue to its merchants’ businesses,” the bank said in a statement.

“The Alipay integration fits with Tyro’s strategy to offer alternative payments, as part of its existing award-winning EFTPOS and banking-specific products.”

The deal with Tyro was part of an Alipay strategy to engage with companies that operate in different markets and provide different directions in Australia, with Tyro providing access to transactions at airports, attractions and high-end retail stores.

Airports in particular were a critical area for Alipay, according to Mr Lawson, because they are “both the first and last memory for tourists”.

“Retailers like Heinemann are recognising the huge opportunity presented by the Chinese visitor boom, particularly in airports which are the gateways to our nation,” he said.

Heinemann Australia managing director Richard Goodman said the retailer was “excited to partner with Tyro yet again in launching Alipay in our Sydney stores”.

“We look forward to introducing exclusive offers over the Chinese New Year period to Alipay users in partnership with Sydney Airport.”
