He said at times Clarke was betting an average of over $3 million per day on football games around the world, including $1.2 million on two American football games, $1 million on a New Zealand provincial rugby game and $1.5 million on a rugby league match between Sydney Roosters and North Queensland Cowboys.
Clarke likened his methodology to putting “typically large bets on favourites on a two horse race based on limited research”.
Clarke worked as a junior lawyer at high-profile law firm Atanaskovic Hartnell Lawyers, which was a long-term adviser to Mr Gordon.
According to the statement of agreed facts filed in the District Court, Clarke “tricked” Deutsche Bank settlement staff into believing that Mr Gordon had provided authorisation for the transfer of funds from a share swap facility to Atanaskovic Hartnell’s trust account.
Mr Gordon gave no authorisation for the transfer of funds and what purported to be AH’s trust account was in fact Clarke’s personal Westpac bank account in the Leura branch, opened some 30 years ago.
More to come.
