‘Super Mario Bros.’ theme is a killer song for a gymnastics routine

Video game music is a largely (but not entirely!) untapped treasure trove for the gymnasts of the world.

Brigham Young University gymnast Shannon Hortman-Evans took to the floor on Friday night to perform an impressive routine at a meet against the University of Utah — to the tune of the Super Mario Bros. theme.

Unfortunately, the music is a little hard to hear over the commentators, but you can still catch little pieces of it here and there, including some parts of the main theme, coin noises, and the tune that plays when Mario grabs a Super Star.

The whole thing feels like a real-life version of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. The only thing we’re missing is a bunch of Toads and Shy Guys cheering Hortman-Evans on in the stands.

Even though we can’t hear most of the music, the routine itself is impressive enough to carry the moment. Evans scored a 9.900 out of 10 with all those flips, jumps, and moves.

Hopefully this will inspire some more video game-based floor routines. Maybe somebody could take on the haunting Halo theme next.
